In celebration of World Water Day and Philippine Water Week, the Environmental Management Bureau Regional Office No. III (EMB-R3), through its Environmental Education and Information Unit, organized on 29-30 March 2021 a two-day activity titled “Valuing Water” via Microsoft Teams platform.
The webinar participants were officials and employees of EMB-R2, DENR PENRO Cagayan, DENR PENRO Cavite, CENRO City of San Jose del Monte, local government units as well as participants from Aurora State College of Technology, Asia Pacific College of Advanced Studies, Attivo Realty Development Corporation, Bataan Peninsula State University, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, CRL Environmental Corporation, Mindanao State University, Plaridel Water District, SFI Multimix Corporation among others.
Engr. Dennis O. Celestial (Chief, Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division) started the program with the delivery of Opening Remarks in which he welcomed all the participants for the activity and briefly elaborated the essence of the foregoing environmental celebrations which placed water in the limelight.
For the first session, For. Reymar B. Soriano (Project Monitoring and Evaluation Officer) and Reynaldo T. Nuñes (Development Management Officer II) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region III jointly discussed the topic on Watershed and Wetlands Conservation. Forester Soriano enlightened the participants on the classification and use of watersheds and reminded that the way water is valued is tantamount to the same significance given towards watersheds and vice versa. Then, Forester Nuñes shared the importance of wetlands and the different Ramsar sites in the Philippines.
The next session was presented by Mr. Ian Joseph M. Dianso, the current Operations Head and Pollution Control Officer of Anda Power Corporation. In his presentation, he imparted the different processes and best practices that the project undertakes in an effort to improve its wastewater management.
The following day started off with the discussion on Septage Treatment Plant Operations and Management which was facilitated by Engr. Ma. Victoria E. Signo, the Department Manager of the Sewerage and Sanitation Division of the Baliwag Water District. She presented the operations of the water district’s wastewater treatment plant as well as shared the best practices and future plans of the project.
For the ensuing and last part, Mr. Ramjay G. Dizon, Senior Environmental Management Specialist assigned under the Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division of EMB-R3, discussed the salient features of the Republic Act No. 9275, otherwise known as the “Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004.” He likewise presented the current state of the Philippine waters, the effects of water crisis in women and children as well as the various ways through which the general populace can conserve water.
To conclude officially the webinar, Engr. Raldy R. Pagador (Chief, Clearance and Permitting Division) reminisced his experience of clean waterbodies during his trip in another country and shared his aspiration that the same may also be realized in the Philippines. Then, he extended his gratitude to the resource speakers and participants for the successful conduct of the activity.
The webinar was held in consonance with Republic Act No. 9512, otherwise known as the “National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008” which aims to promote awareness on the condition of the environment and natural resources through the conduct of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns and elicit the much-needed participation of the public for environmental causes.
